we support indie bookstores

Muggles Sticker

Although we already pre-ordered two copies of Harry Potter #7 from Barnes & Noble and were planning on attending the store’s pre-midnight festivities, J and I decided we’d rather support the local independent bookstore down the street from our apartment and get our books there. Plus, it sounds like they’re going to have a much more creative release party for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

  • Hogwarts professors will be on hand for trivia questions.
  • Parking lot Quidditch games will be played.
  • Therapists will offer solace for those suffering from Potter withdrawal.
  • Popcorn and butterbeer will be served.
  • Costume contest.

photo recap

Here are some photos of the mundane taken over the past couple of weeks. This is my life in O.

Homemade muffins for breakfast (ok, I used a mixed).

Mini Muffins for Breakfast

We’ve only gotten two flowers from the gardenia my parents gave us as a housewarming present, which we named Bernice. Sadly, I think she’s going to die soon. I’m a terrible plant-mother.

harry potter and the order of the phoenix

Here’s what you get when you go see the 12:01 AM premiere of a Harry Potter movie: lots and lots of people. Especially teenagers. In costume. We arrived at the theater around 11:15 PM Tuesday night unaware of how crowded it would be. Silly me, I didn’t expect four stadium-seating theaters to be nearly filled to capacity by that time. The only two seats J and I could find next to each other among all the wanna-be Gryffindors were in the second-to-last row. Those who have gone to the movies with me probably know that I hate arriving late. And I don’t mean after the movie has started. Being late in my book means not being able to pick the seats I want. I was kicking myself for not waking J up from his nap sooner.

As for the movie — yes, it was definitely an abridged version of book #5 (which frustrated J, who thought the director and screenwriters took too many liberties), but it had to be in order to keep the story moving at a quick enough pace. I loved it, except for:

  • The lack of screen time of some of my favorite characters: McGonagall, Trewlaney, Lupin, Sirius, Snape
  • Sirius Black: he was so much sexier in #4 when he was all dirty and slightly crazy
  • Emma Watson’s forehead
  • How unrealistic Grawp looked
  • Harry’s short haircut
  • How several interesting scenarios from the book, such as St. Mungo’s Hospital, were left out of the movie

There were other things that bothered me, but I’ll ruin the movie for you if I talked about them. If I think of any other reasons, I’ll add them later on. Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think?

tennis? cattle herding?

I left the apartment Tuesday morning a little before noon to meet J down near his place of employment to play some lunch-time tennis. Have I mentioned that I want to start playing tennis? With a court across the street, I have no excuse not to. I used to play every summer at camp, but I never excelled beyond “average.” I’m thinking of taking a couple of lessons and getting J to take them with me. So I got my racket re-gripped and re-strung over the weekend and even bought my first tennis skirt. Sexy!

Back to my story: So I left my apartment around noon. J had typed up directions in extra-large font because I’d never driven to meet him at work and I’m not very comfortable on the interstate/highway/freeway yet. I would have have gotten there quickly and stress-free had not just 10 minutes beforehand a truck overturn on the interstate right where I needed to get on. There were cops, firetrucks, news trucks and helicopters everywhere, and no detour signs anywhere. I’m taking right turns, left turns, and have no idea where I’m heading. It’s times like this I really wish I had a navigation system.

But me getting lost is not the interesting part of the story. I eventually found my way. And when I got to where I was going, there was a TV broadcasting the local news and showing footage of the accident I witnessed. Turns out it was a cattle truck that overturned! The driver survived, but some of the cattle ran away — into my neighborhood! — and some were put down by the authorities because they were injured. I think that’s really sad. But the idea of farm animals running around the highway? Ok, I think that’s kind of funny.

#5 countdown!

I was up until 4:00 AM this morning finishing up Harry Potter #5. And now I’m counting down until the movie starts at 12:01 AM — just 1.5 hours to go! I’m going to push J to get us to the theater by 11 PM. I’ve never been to the first showing of a big film like this before, and I have no idea what kind of line there’ll be to get in. I’m sure the crowd here will be nothing like in NYC, but there are tons of kiddies, little and big ones, like J and I.
