knottie bio of the week

Congrats to my friend Katie, who was picked as a “Knottie Bio of the Week” on Weddingbee! How beautiful do Katie and her friends and family look? If I were going to have an outdoor destination wedding, I’d want it to be just like hers.

J and I discovered The Bombay Company today, and The Bombay Company discovered our credit card.

After brunch with a new friend at Wheatfields, we wandered into The Bombay Company looking for nightstands. We’ve looked everywhere for nightstands — NFM, Goodwill, Craiglist, Target, BB&B, C&B, Pottery Barn, etc. — and today we found (something close to) what we were hoping for. We also found a console for the “foyer” and a dark coral/mauve quilt set. Everything was on sale, but even sale items can add up to a big number. Thank goodness for engagement gift money! It feels good to be able to put other people’s generosity towards things that we actually need in order to start our life together.

Here’s what our bed looks like now — minus the four-poster frame, the striped pillows and the floral one.

the words you don’t want to hear

“I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you.”

The good news: J finally installed a super high-tech stereo in my car that has iPod support.

The bad news: My iPod just died. Like, immediately after he finished the installation.

Like a proper computer nerd, J is getting to the bottom of my iPod’s mysterious death. More details to come.

Update: After banging the right side of the iPod against a hard surface several times, J managed to get it up and running again.  Don’t know how long it will stay with us this time, but at least I’ll get to try hooking up to the new stereo!

spectacular, spectacular

Yesterday’s pool party was tons of fun. I’m always nervous upon meeting new people (will they like me? will we have anything in common?), but I quickly relaxed after seeing how easy-going the group was. The few people J and I had met previously seemed happy to see us, and those we didn’t know made a point of introducing themselves and getting to know us. And what could be better than hanging out in and around a pool when it’s close to 100 degrees outside with not a cloud in the sky? We stayed for about 5 hours and then returned to the apartment and crashed on the couch. Being in the sun all day is tiresome! We watched Running With Scissors, which was nowhere near as compelling as the book, and watched some fireworks going off less than 10 miles away from our living room couch. For good measure we also watched 15 minutes or so of the fireworks spectacular taking place in Boston on TV.

I’ve never really liked fireworks. They bore me. I can enjoy them for about 5 minutes, but then they all start looking the same to me. Plus, they are loud (when watching them in person) and dangerous! Did you hear about the woman who went to check on a box of fireworks that weren’t going off? Just as she stuck her head over the box…well, you can guess what happened. True story. Someone from the pool party heard about it on CNN.

As I snuggled on the couch with J, my mind traveled back to one year ago — Lindsey and I watched the fireworks over the Hudson through her bedroom window in the Village, then I staggered back to my apartment and called J. (We had only met about a week beforehand.) We were both a bit wasted, so our inhibitions were lower, and he told me that it was love at first sight for him. I couldn’t sleep at all that night. All I could think about was seeing him again. We met up a couple days later for a rendezvous in Syracuse, but that’s a story for another time.

wear sunscreen!

J and I were invited to a 4th of July pool party this afternoon hosted by a couple who belong to the temple and JCC. There should be a nice mix of older and younger Jewish couples in attendance — excellent for networking and making new friends. Because the only two bathing suits I own are J Crew bikinis from several years ago (i.e. worn out), I spent yesterday searching for a more modest one-piece to wear. My first stop was Dillard’s, which I think is comparable to Macy’s. They had a huge selection of suits, although very few were my size and none were on sale. Still, I bought a tankini that could pass as conservative. Next I went to Younkers — I don’t know what East coast store would be similar. It’s definitely a lower-end department store. The bathing suit section was extremely picked over, but I did manage to find a one-piece that was marked 30% off plus an additional 45% off. I also find the bottoms to the tankini I purchased at Dillard’s on sale for $18 cheaper, so I bought it too. I think I’ll wear the one-piece today. It’s a big more mature (and has a plunging v-neck that J really likes).

This morning I tried to transfer my cell phone number to the Treo my father gave me but couldn’t figure out how to do it online. The representative I spoke to over the phone couldn’t do it either, so I’ll have to take it into a Verizon store and insist (politely) that they not charge me $20 to activate the phone. I mean, I made two valid attempts to do it on my own. I shouldn’t be penalized if their customer services rep wasn’t able to figure it out too.

Time to get ready for the party! It just dawned on me that I don’t own waterproof mascara. In fact, I don’t own any waterproof makeup. This is not good. Without makeup I look like I’m 14 years old, and I’d prefer not looking like a teenager when meeting new people.

Oh well. Happy 4th!
