Somewhere in Middle America

the killers

Last night J and I saw The Killers at the Mid-America Center in Iowa. The seating was most unusual for this concert. They only used half of the arena, and the $27 general admission tickets got you your choice of seat — you literally could sit anywhere you’d like. For $35 you got to stand the whole night right in front of the stage. Naturally, we splurged, although during the opening band (Louis XIV) I was wishing we had seats. They were terrible.

The Killers, on the other hand, were amazing. This is the 3rd time I’ve seen them live — first at Lollapalooza in ’05 and then at the Theater at MSG in October ’06. This concert and the one last October were both promoting Sam’s Town. Say what you want about Brandon Flowers, but that boy knows how to put on a show. He really pours his heart and soul into every word he sings, and he’s one of the few lead singers nowadays who can actually sing.

The only thing unfortunate about the evening (besides my aching feet) was that we were standing next to the rowdiest bunch of high school boys. They had zero concert-etiquette. They spent the night jumping into everybody– seriously, a mosh pit at The Killers concert? — and sweating all over me. And they spent the night crowd surfing. It was highly distracting. I don’t understand crowd surfing at all. Never once in my life have I had the urge to let strangers put their hands all over my body while hoping they don’t let me fall headfirst into the floor.

Here are some pictures I took with my Treo.

labor day weekend recap

Saturday - Met up with Julie for manicures and decided to be trendy and get the dark blue color I’ve been seeing in fashion magazines. I feel kind of like a goth girl, now — not sure I really like it. Surprisingly, J does. When our nails dried, J met us for lunch at Paradise Bakery — yum. For the rest of the afternoon, J and I walked in and out of the stores at Village Point. When we got home, I spent some time writing an article for the Jewish Press. After some dinner, we went to see Superbad, which was super good and VERY vulgar. To save money, I smuggled into the theater soda cans and $1 boxes of candy from Walgreens. Of course we still bought popcorn.

Sunday - Up and out early in the morning to be at the Henry Doorly Zoo when it opened. Spent the day with the H’s — the wife works with J — who both brought their digital SLR cameras. It was a photographic safari! I also brought my camera and, following the advice of Tom Ang, took some pretty good pictures, if I do say so myself. The best part of the day was watching a three-legged monkey attempt to torment a baby monkey in the “jungle” section of the zoo. I’ll post those pictures, for sure. After we got home, showered and rested our weary feet, it was off to the B’s for fajitas, homemade margaritas and Blades of Glory, during which both of the guys fell asleep.

Monday - Brunch at the Garden Cafe with two new transplants to Omaha, who moved here from DC two weeks ago, followed by a stop at the pet store to play with the puppies, where I fell in love with a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. Then J and I made a shopping detour to Banana Republic (where he bought a whole new wardrobe) and Bombay Company (where we bought a huge mirror for over the mantle for only $44). After a couple of hours relaxing at home (and finishing up my JP article), we met Mike and Steph S. at Red Robin, where I had a guacamole bacon burger. Delish! Then we watched Blood Diamond on their 50-inch plasma TV. What an intense movie. I was sure I wasn’t going to like it because of Leo’s faux-South African accent, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Still, I can’t decide how much I really liked it.
