Somewhere in Middle America

omaha world-herald supports mccain

You know you live in the Midwest when your local newspaper endorses John McCain for president, which the Omaha World-Herald did on Sunday.

Sen. Barack Obama, who is leading in presidential election polls, has demonstrated qualities that this newspaper has editorially praised and highlighted. The Democratic presidential nominee displays a remarkable ability to inspire voters. He speaks to commendable American ideals.

But in several key respects, the Democratic nominee’s approach is at great variance from long-standing principles that guide this newspaper’s editorial page. Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee, is closer to those positions.

This newspaper finds McCain to be the stronger candidate for the country’s needs.

What long-standing principles guide the Omaha World-Herald‘s editorial page? Le sigh… I suppose this is to be expected when you live in a red state. I wonder if there are any Nebraska newspapers endorsing Obama.

In other news, gas prices are dropping! Hooray!

halloween costumes required

J and I were invited to a “costumes mandatory” Halloween party next week.  Since my head is too busy worrying about packing and caring for the new puppy, I’m looking to you to help me come up with a costume.  I thought it’d be cute if we went dressed up as a pair of something, but at this point, I don’t really care whether our costumes coordinate!

Please leave your suggestions in the comment box below. Perhaps I’ll giving the person with the winning idea some sort of prize… Hmm…

‘dirty dancing’ coming to nyc this fall

Nobody puts Baby in the corner… on Broadway?

Can you believe that J’s never seen this classic? I can’t even count the number of times I watched it as a kid–not having any idea that Penny’s “stomach problem” was the result of an illegal abortion. She was actually my favorite character in the movie. I thought Cynthia Rhodes was so beautiful. Whatever happened to her?

coffee shrinks boobs

Besides the fact that tea is chock full of antioxidants, here’s another good reason why I should switch from coffee to tea.

Scientists have discovered that drinking just three cups of coffee a day can make women’s breasts shrink.

According to Swedish researchers who surveyed nearly 300 women, three cups a day was enough to start making breasts shrink, with the effects increasing for every additional cup.

Experts say there is a clear link between drinking coffee and smaller breasts as around half of all women possess a gene that has been shown to link breast size to coffee intake.

“Drinking coffee can have a major effect on breast size. Coffee-drinking women do not have to worry their breasts will shrink to nothing overnight. They will get smaller, but the breasts aren’t just going to disappear,” says Helena Jernstroem, a lecturer in experimental oncology at Lund University in Sweden.

Are you a coffee or a tea drinker?
