a gate at the stairs

Inspired by Real Simple’s No Obligation Book Club pick from a couple of month’s ago, I put A Gate at the Stairs on hold at the library at the end of the year, and a couple of weeks ago I received a call that it was available to pick up. It sat on my coffee table for a while, fighting with the TV for my attention. Last week, when I was feeling particularly blue, I decided to take a bubble bath. Since I can’t watch TV in the bathroom (can you?), it was the perfect opportunity to crack open LorrieĀ Moore’s book.
It took a short while to get into A Gate at the Stairs, but once I did, I read it in less than two days. The author’s style was a bit too lyrical for my taste – some of her descriptions went on and on – but the story was interesting and the main character’s perspective on the people and events surrounding her was compelling.

What are you reading?
Just finished Tim O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods- wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but it wasn’t horrible. Also reading David Hume’s Nature of Religion for the umpteenth time- a deceivingly thin book. About to begin The Devil in the White City.
I like to read!
I loved Devil in the White City. A really great non-fiction book. I just finished A.S. Byatt’s The Children’s Book and a book called The Northern Clemency. (we had a TON of snow). I would recommend both of those.
