do you use bookplates?
When I worked in publishing, many of the books I acquired were first editions and/or signed by the author. After reading them I immediately placed them in my bookcase to avoid any additional damage to the cover or the spine. To preserve their integrity, I very rarely let friends borrow them.
Now I usually get my books from the public library. If I’m not checking them out, I’m buying them used at their book sales. Sometimes I’ll get new ones online from Amazon. Since these books are not first editions, I’m not as over protective of them and am OK lending them out… but I am concerned about getting them back!
Perhaps bookplates are the way to go with my non-first edition books. What do you think? Do you use bookplates in your books? What are some of your favorites?

I have a stamp that says “From the Library of Jessica A Feinstein”. it is circular with an ornate “F” in the middle. I love it. I never plan on selling my books or using them as an investment, so I don’t mind stamping. Although..I did refrain from stamping my Harry Potter 1st eds!!
If I ever get rid of a book it is usually b/c I don’t want it anymore and I sell it to a used bookstore, and I don’t care if it has a stamp in it or not! and neither do they.
As a follow up…
You can see a similar design (with different wording around the sides). They have hundreds of different options.

I actually had mine made in Omaha by a local stamp maker and it was cheaper, and I designed the stamp myself. No templates for me!
I use bookplates! They were a gift from my mom. I never thought of them ruining first-editions though. I probably don’t have any! When I did not have book plates, I just wrote my name on one of the first pages. I have some books tagged by my mom and grandmother as well. (They probably want those back…ha) I like the stamp idea as well! When I run out of the bookplates I have now, I think it would be nice to have some printed with my name. I usually only but the bookplates in hardback books. I wonder why I don’t do the same for regular paperbacks?
I am equally as protective of my first editions and my hardbacks, but generally don’t write my name or use bookplates. However, my philosophy on paperbacks is that sharing is a good thing and I generally either let friends “borrow” them with the hope they’ll keep passing them on or I donate them to the library.
I have to! If I don’t, I will never get my books back from the students and teachers I lend them too! I have a simple stamp (that I got for free! from vistaprint.com) and it says “This book belongs to Mrs. Papadopoulos”
