Somewhere in Middle America

harry potter and the order of the phoenix

Here’s what you get when you go see the 12:01 AM premiere of a Harry Potter movie: lots and lots of people. Especially teenagers. In costume. We arrived at the theater around 11:15 PM Tuesday night unaware of how crowded it would be. Silly me, I didn’t expect four stadium-seating theaters to be nearly filled to capacity by that time. The only two seats J and I could find next to each other among all the wanna-be Gryffindors were in the second-to-last row. Those who have gone to the movies with me probably know that I hate arriving late. And I don’t mean after the movie has started. Being late in my book means not being able to pick the seats I want. I was kicking myself for not waking J up from his nap sooner.

As for the movie — yes, it was definitely an abridged version of book #5 (which frustrated J, who thought the director and screenwriters took too many liberties), but it had to be in order to keep the story moving at a quick enough pace. I loved it, except for:

  • The lack of screen time of some of my favorite characters: McGonagall, Trewlaney, Lupin, Sirius, Snape
  • Sirius Black: he was so much sexier in #4 when he was all dirty and slightly crazy
  • Emma Watson’s forehead
  • How unrealistic Grawp looked
  • Harry’s short haircut
  • How several interesting scenarios from the book, such as St. Mungo’s Hospital, were left out of the movie

There were other things that bothered me, but I’ll ruin the movie for you if I talked about them. If I think of any other reasons, I’ll add them later on. Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think?
