Somewhere in Middle America

i know it’s a fanny pack, but…

As many of you know, while J is away I’m in charge of planning our belated honeymoon to Italy in September. One of my favorite things to do is imagine what outfits I’ll wear when we visit Venice, Florence and Rome. I don’t want to look like a tourist; I want to look like a young, fashionable newlywed! I picture myself wearing cute sundresses, slim capris, and comfortable walking shoes that are NOT made by Nike.

However, I’ve been warned about the rampant pickpocketing in Italy, especially in Rome. My mom was nearly pickpocketed when she was there with my grandmother a couple of years ago. Now a more experienced traveler, she always wears one of Rick Steves’s silk moneybelts underneath her tops to hold her money, passport and other valuables when galavanting across Europe. However, under-the-clothing moneybelts and cute sundresses don’t really work together.

Then I saw this leather pouch belt from Intuition via WhoWhatWear. It’s a little more “rocker” than I am, but it could do the trick. Would something like this deter the pickpocketers? Obviously it’d be too small to hold my camera, but that’s OK because my camera will probably be glued to my hand and my face.

Here are two from Coach and Le Sport Sac. I don’t love them, but they could serve my purpose.

What would carry if you were going to Italy?

Great ideas about fanny packs. BUT…….wear something cute outside, but wear your money belt INSIDE. Pick pocketers actually come up to you and unzip your bag right in front of you while someone else hassles you. It’s a one- two punch deal. Been there, done that. And I was so careful too! Even as I yelled at the 4 young girls going after my fanny pack, they didn’t care nor stop. Even having my mother with me and her yelling and shooing them away, didn’t stop them. They only left when an Italian women yelled at them. It’s NOT worth loosing your belongings and money just to look cute. So, my suggestion would be to keep all valueables in the money belt under your clothes and a few Euros in your “cutefanny pack”. Just my thoughts…MOM
