learning how to dance

Last night J and I had our first dance lesson. Our instructor is a member of the Omaha Jitterbugs and taught us in the small studio she built in her home. We spent the hour learning how to look elegant while slow dancing to our first dance song, which has a bit of an unusual tempo. I danced in heels like I will be at the wedding, and my left calf was so sore when we were finished. A couple hours later, my whole body ached — my back, my shoulders, my forearms. I had no idea that slow dancing could be such a workout, but I guess that’s what happens when you try to hold a certain posture for a long period of time; you engage all of these muscles that you normally don’t use.

At our next lesson we’ll review what we learned yesterday and then add some new steps to our repertoire. (Hopefully I’ll remember everything on the day of the wedding!) In the upcoming weeks we’ll also learn how to Jitterbug and Foxtrot. I’m so excited!
