we support indie bookstores

Although we already pre-ordered two copies of Harry Potter #7 from Barnes & Noble and were planning on attending the store’s pre-midnight festivities, J and I decided we’d rather support the local independent bookstore down the street from our apartment and get our books there. Plus, it sounds like they’re going to have a much more creative release party for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

  • Hogwarts professors will be on hand for trivia questions.
  • Parking lot Quidditch games will be played.
  • Therapists will offer solace for those suffering from Potter withdrawal.
  • Popcorn and butterbeer will be served.
  • Costume contest.

So yesterday evening, about 15 minutes before the store closed, J and I popped in to put our names on the list for the book. We started chatting with the two women behind the counter, and they seemed impressed when they learned I used to work for one of the biggest publishing houses back in New York. They asked what I was looking to do in Omaha, and I mentioned that I’d love to be an event coordinator at a bookstore (at my old job, I used to plan author events at bookstores across the country and worked with event coordinators all the time). Well, it turns out that the current event coordinator at the bookstore is going to be leaving, and the women behind the counter practically threw an application my way. I brought it home, filled it out, and returned it about an hour ago!

If this actually works out, I guess I have J.K. Rowling to thank for my job.
