Somewhere in Middle America

the perfect aquamarine ring

Today I’m officially 30-and-a-half, so I figure it’s time I gave some serious thought to my belated birthday gift. I’m owed a 30th birthday gift because I wasn’t sure what to ask for when I hit the milestone in March, but I realized over the summer that I’d really like an aquamarine ring to mark the occasion. Clearly, this isn’t a new idea, as I also wanted a piece of jewelry with my birthstone for my 29th birthday. Needless to say, I didn’t get it. (Ahem, husband. You read the blog, right?)

Marco Bicego Small Amethyst Jaipur Ring

This year, however, I prefer a chunky cocktail ring rather than a set of simple stacking rings that I would wear everyday on my right hand. I’m totally obsessing over this amethyst Marco Bicego Jaipur ring. I love the textured band, which almost looks like faux bois. I was told it comes in blue topaz which looks like aquamarine (kind of), but I can’t find an image online. Unfortunately, it’s way out of our price range…and it’s not aquamarine.Conroy & Wilcox Aquamarine Ring

My second favorite ring is this Conroy & Wilcox 18K aquamarine ring. The organic rough-and-tumbled look of the stone makes it casual, yet the size of it makes it a statement piece. But, alas, it’s also way too expensive.

Garnet Girl Aquamarine Ring

After an extensive search on Etsy for a more affordable aquamarine ring, I stumbled upon Garnet Girl Designs. Her 14K Rock Fetish aquamarine ring might be the perfect compromise. I love the matte finish of the band and the large faceted stone. However, I worry that the color of the aquamarine may not be as intense a shade of blue as I would want, especially since I can’t see it in person before buying. But, the bluer the stone, the higher the price, so I may just have to settle for a paler aquamarine.

I suppose an alternative option would be to buy a loose aquamarine stone and commission somebody to build a ring around it. I wonder how much it would cost to go down that route…

Some of my friends hate their birthstone (hey, J & L, there’s nothing wrong with peridot!), but I love mine…I just don’t love how expensive it is!

How do you feel about your birthstone? Would you want a piece of jewelry with your birthstone in it?

Allium Flowers

Today feels like the perfect Fall day. Woke up to temperatures in the low 60s, and the high temp, as predicted by my fave, Rusty Lord, will be near 75 degrees. What a way to usher in Labor Day Weekend!

Do you have big plans for the holiday weekend? I have nothing on my calendar yet, but I’m hoping that will change. I do not want to sit around on my bum for three days, sulking because J isn’t home. This is exactly the reason why I like to make plans in advance — I love having something to look forward to! Blank pages in my calendar make me sad. Do you agree?

On to the list:

Emily and I have the same desk. So why doesn’t mine look as stylish as hers? (PS: I want a Ghost chair!)

If I had an extra $1,000, I would buy a Satomi Kawakita ring in a heartbeat. (via Unruly Things)

Briscoe would never do what Uki did.

I need to look for some eggplants at the farmer’s market this weekend.

Oscar has the most adorable handmade denim trousers.

Would you wear two belts at the same time?

Joy’s dining room is a work in progress, but I already love it.

Truthfully, I think J and I are a pretty cool couple.

charming

For the past couple of months I’ve been drooling over the Helen Ficalora intial charms at Trocadero. I’d love to wear the “P” charm in gold on a 16 inch chain.

But my latest obsession is Albeit‘s alphabet necklace, which I discovered via Oh Joy!

How gorgeous is that? At $310 a pop for a 14K gold cable chain necklace and pendant, it would be a piece I’d wear everyday.

alexis bittar cluster necklace

A couple of days a week I work at Trocadero, a lifestyle and accessories boutique in Omaha’s Old Market. Before moving to Omaha in 2007, the owner, Alice Kim, was an editor at In Style magazine in New York City and thus has fantastic taste in shoes, handbags, jewelry and home goods. While I was an admirer of many of the brands and products she carries in her shop when I started, every day I’m there I discover a new favorite. Yesterday’s discovery was Alexis Bittar–specifically, this oxidized silver double link necklace with aquamarine, green tiger’s eye and iolite stones. I tried it on while I was wearing a white tank top and navy Banana Republic cardigan and it totally enhanced my outfit, so much so, that Alice let me wear it to a fundraising dinner that evening. Of course I had to photograph when I got home… before I reluctantly returned it to the store.

becky kelso jewlery

If money were no object, I’d buy this necklace by Becky Kelso in a heartbeat. It may be the most gorgeous piece of jewelry I’ve seen in a long time.
