Somewhere in Middle America

(500) days of summer

I hope this Sundance Film Festival pick, (500) Days of Summer, finds its way to an Omaha movie theater.

PS: I can’t believe how much Joseph Gordon-Levitt has matured. I still remember him as Tommy from the TV show 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Last night, J and I dined on Papa John’s pizza, a homemade Caesar salad and a bottle of wine while watching “In Bruges” on HBO on Demand. It’s been on both of our “must see” lists–especially after Colin Farrell won a Golden Globe for his performance. Now that I’ve watched it, I definitely agree that he deserved that award. He was brilliant as a hit man with a conscience, as was the banter between him and Brendan Gleeson. (Of course, I needed subtitles; I am terrible with accents.)

If you can handle some blood and gore and appreciate British humor, I’d definitely recommend “In Bruges.” If you’ve already seen it, what did you think?

Now I kind of want to visit that “fairy-tale” medieval town.

If 2008 was the year of my obsession with James McAvoy, 2009 is the year of Robert Pattinson — or should I say Edward Cullen. After reading the Twilight series and seeing the movie, I have a full-on vampire crush. That wild hair. Those serious eyes. That intensity. Sigh.

The chemistry between Edward and his human soul-mate, Bella, has actually induced a bit a jealous in this grown girl. Their passion hurts my heart a little because it makes me think of — and miss — J.

Isn’t this all so silly? It’s just (poorly written) teen fiction, for goodness sake!

Nobody puts Baby in the corner… on Broadway?

Can you believe that J’s never seen this classic? I can’t even count the number of times I watched it as a kid–not having any idea that Penny’s “stomach problem” was the result of an illegal abortion. She was actually my favorite character in the movie. I thought Cynthia Rhodes was so beautiful. Whatever happened to her?

definitely, maybe

Last night, while working on a craft project from my couch, I watched Definitely, Maybe, a movie J would not have agreed to Netflix if he were home. I remember hearing that it could be Ryan Renolds’s breakout role as a leading man, and I agree. He was absolutely charming in this romantic comedy — funny, emotional, easy on the eyes. I thought the story was well-written; normally you can tell within the first 20 minutes how a romantic comedy is going to end, but this one twisted and turned until the very last scene.

Plus, it stars Rachel Weisz and Isla Fisher, two actress I admire for their beauty and their talent, and the adorable Abigail Breslin. In one of the bonus features on the DVD, Derek Luke, who plays a friend to Ryan’s character, confessed that wanted to do the film because he heard that Abigail had a role — even though they don’t share a single scene together. That’s how much he loved her in Little Miss Sunshine.

I loved the rapport between Ryan (Will) and Abigail (Maya) as father and daughter:

Maya Hayes: I’m guessing you weren’t her first boyfriend. Maybe it was some nerdy guy, or maybe he was mean. Or maybe, you were friends for the longest time, and then just when you were about to put your penis in somebody else’s vagina…
Will Hayes: Okay. Good night Maya.
Maya Hayes: …you realized Mom was the only one for you!
Will Hayes: Bedtime!
