Somewhere in Middle America

a julestastic weekend

With both of our husbands out of town, my friend Julie and I decided to have a girls-only weekend. Saturday night we went to Chipotle for dinner and then to the movies. Originally we were going to see “WALL-E,” but since we got to the theater late we saw “Wanted” instead, which was also on our To See list. There are worse things to do for two hours than watch the pretty James McAvoy and the prettier Angelina Jolie get sweaty and wave guns around.

Yesterday we met up at the new Sephora at Village Point and bought some eye shadow and eye liner. Then we did some browsing in DSW and the Gap. She had to leave after that to babysit a friend’s kids, but I continued on to J. Crew, where I bought a couple of tank tops and a couple of bracelets on sale.

My last stop of the day: Verizon Wireless. I traded in my Blackberry Curve for the new LG Dare. It’s Verizon’s version of the iPhone, and I am very excited to use it. The tech guy was extremely patient with me and basically installed everything I would need on to the phone because I told him that J was away and I had no idea what I was doing. It must have taken him almost 1 1/2 hours to do the exchange, set up my new phone and answer all my questions.

I took a bunch of photos from Friday night, but I’m waiting for my new memory card reader to arrive in the mail. Once I get it, I’ll post the pics and tell you more about my 4th of July.

Hope you had a great holiday weekend!

high fidelity

high fidelity

Last night I finished reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, a book that’s been sitting on a shelf waiting to be read for a number of years. Tonight, after dinner with a group of friends, I watched the movie version. (Thank you Netflix for that perfect timing.)

Verdict: The book is so much better (though not my favorite Hornby selection).

movies: 3 to see, 1 to skip

J’s been under the weather, so we’ve spent the past couple of days watching movies snuggled on the couch.

On day 1 we watched Once (see post below).

On day 2 we watched The Hudsucker Proxy.

The film’s been around for nearly 14 years but neither J nor I had seen it. Like so many other potential viewers, I’m sure, the odd title turned us off from it. But there wasn’t much else playing on HBO on Demand that we wanted to see, so we gave in, and now we both regret having waited so long to see it. It was very amusing, and Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh were terrific in their roles. I was dumbstruck by how quickly JJL was able to recite her lines. See it.

On day 3 we watched Death at a Funeral.

Holy shit. This is now one of my favorite movies. I adore British humor. I was feeling a bit grumpy before we started it, but scene after scene I laughed my ass off, and by the end I was in a fabulous mood. Alan Tudyk, who played “Steve the Pirate” in Dodgeball, nearly stole the show just by his facial expressions. See it.

On day 3 I ventured out of the apartment to see The Other Boleyn Girl with LB.

I wanted to love it. At the very least, I wanted to like it. I enjoyed the novel on which the film was based (though not as much as those who recommended I read it did) and was curious to see how the filmmakers would condense 650+ pages of material into a 2 hour movie. Here’s how they did it — by leaving out all of the details that made the book interesting. The film was like the Cliffs Notes version of the novel, and I was disappointed that they skipped over major storylines. And Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson weren’t even convincing as sisters. Skip it.

Have you seen any good movies lately?

once, finally

J and I finally got around to watching Once. It was such a beautiful love story without actually being a love story. It was a modern day musical that didn’t feel like a musical.

Go rent it.

oscars: favorite movie i didn’t see

I’m kicking myself for not having seen Once yet. Friends have fallen in love with it. The song won the Oscar last night, and the real-life couple who star in the low-budget film are just so freaking adorable I can almost look past the slightly creepy age difference.
