Somewhere in Middle America

wedding dress preservation

No, this is not a photo of me. I didn’t “trash my dress” after my wedding. It’s hanging in my bedroom closet in my parents’ house, exactly where I left it after the wedding weekend. It’s safe and sound–but dirty. I haven’t let my mom take the dress to be cleaned and preserved yet because she thinks that the neighborhood dry cleaner will suffice. I’m not so sure about that. This is my wedding dress we’re talking about! But I know that taking it back to the bridal salon from where it was purchase will likely cost several hundred dollars, and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that option either.

So I’ve been asking around, trying to get recommendations for reputable wedding dress cleaners in NJ. A fellow Jersey girl told me that she used Wed Clean for $100 (now it costs $189). Here’s how it works: After placing your order online, Wed Clean sends you a pre-paid, pre-addressed box. You pack up your dress in the box and bring it to a UPS location to be shipped to Wed Clean in Florida. Two weeks later, Wed Clean delivers your dress, cleaned and preserved, in a museum-quality preservation chest.

I believe my friend when she said they did an excellent job with her dress, and that Wed Clean is a very reputable company. But still… I’m hesistant to put my dress in the mail to be cleaned. What if it doesn’t come back?!

Where did you get your wedding dress cleaned and preserved?
